Now comes word that Novembers Doom will release their eighth record, Aphotic, on May 10.

The CD features special guests on several tracks: Anneke Van Giersbergen (Devin Townsend’s Addicted, The Gathering) delivers a chilling vocal on “What Could Have Been;” world-renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine (Earthen Grave) lends her talent on both “What Could Have Been” and “The Dark Host;” and Bloodbath’s Dan Swanö sings on “Of Age and Origin.”

“One goal in Novembers Doom is to never repeat ourselves,” says frontman Paul Kuhr. That’s a good goal to have. “We aim to constantly challenge our writing abilities to deliver something new each and every time, while maintaining what we feel is our signature sound. We feel we’ve not only accomplished that with Aphotic, but have pushed our creativity into new musical territory. The result is quite possibly the most unique Novembers Doom release yet.”

According to a press release, the new disc has its roots in darkness and melancholic madness, reminiscent of the band’s early doom roots but bringing something new and modern to the listener.

My first edit in six months will reveal that booth my releases are available on Spotify. It took a month and a week or two to get 'em there but it's there. And of course A Silent Nowhere is still on iTunes (sorry no CEW yet)

But that's old news really. Old news is also that this year I would have released the new EP, but that didn't happen. Why?

Here's the story:

The songs were written and recorded in my home studio between the summer of '08 and winter '09 as demos. Bass guitars and vocals were missing and I didn't bother much with guitar sounds or mixing but I was really pleased with the songs.

For the first time I had a vision of how I would like it to sound. I wanted to get away from the polished sound that more or less is considered standard today, and produce a dirtier, rawer sound. My main inspiration for this was My Arms, Your Hearse.

In the meantime I was frustrated working a job that I hated and I had to reconfigure all the songs to the new sound. It was harder than you think. There was a mess of mixing preferences,vst-plugins presets, EQ-prese
ts that weren't saved, duplicates of projects etc etc...it was a mess.

Eventually I managed to somewhat ”re-configure” my songs to the new sound. About the same time I had found a new vocalist.

It took close to 8 months before I got the first vocal recordings.
During that time I couldn't do much with the songs, they were written in stone. What I could do was to get bass guitar on 'em, so I sent the songs to another friend of mine to do it.

Unfortunately I sent the wrong DVD (which was of some unfinished songs) so
the bass guitar tracks are still unfinished.

After all this, my computer broke down in late September and I lost all of my VST-plugins and presets (and Programs – like Cubase...). Thankfully all Apathy material is safely stored.

Eventually I bought a new computer but it's not that easy to get back on track after that, re-installing Cubase 5 instead of 3, and finding all the lost plugins...pheew. Can I hire someone for this?

Alright. The next EP. Well, this time I won't say ”it will be here by Q2” because I lie if I say that. It will be here when it will. Simple as that. But it will be worth waiting for.
